Book Review: 21 Simple Things You Can Do To Help Someone with Diabetes

I was approached by Cherie Burbach the Author of this book to do a guest post for her and when I saw she had written this book, I promptly asked for a copy to review.
I really love this little book and the concept of it. It is a quick and easy read geared towards friends and family of those with diabetes giving them down to earth and practical tips of how to help their loved ones.
Cherie has had diabetes for 20 years herself and really speaks from the heart and personal experience, enriching the book.
I love the way it helps the reader to put themselves into the shoes of someone with diabetes and see it through their eyes, some of the take home messages for me are
  • not to judge, and police them, looking at their plates and so forth to be a good listener and understanding
  • it reminds the reader of how complex diabetes is, its not all about what you eat, and that blood sugars are affected by many factors, food, activity, stress and illness
  • it also offers practical advice such as learning how to give shots and check blood sugar so if needed they can offer a helping hand
  • also to keep healthy food on hand and sugar free soda when your loved one comes to visit.
  • It suggests learning about the condition and attending support groups, with them.
Its a great book I highly recommend it.

  1. For sure this book must be very good for all the people with diabetes.

Everyone could have, potentially, diabetes depending of several factors like genetics, healthy eating and be sedentary.

    Cheers!

  2. Thanks for sharing, Rebecca.
Our friend's 3-year-old daughter has just been diagnosed with diabetes (type 1). I'm so sad for the little one.

  3. Thanks for writing this Rebecca. I had no idea the challenge of diabetes until I had a college roommate with the disease. Kudos to Cherie for giving awareness to how we can help diabetics along the way.

  6. Thanks. I have some earlier posts with some pics from some local meals. Lots and lots of fish and potatoes. More to come on my blog, I promise! I should be going to a bull fight this weekend and attending the party at the house of a Portugese family. They are expected to have tons of dishes there and I am really looking forward to hopefully getting the inside scoop.

  7. I think it is great that you reviewed a book that is for a special group that needs as much information and support, as possible.

I remember whenwe found out that my husband has celiac and I was lost, searching for information.. The doctor told us to come back to him and let him know what we have learned. That was encouraging.

I searched the Internet but at that time, there was not that much. Today, it is so much easier.

So, thanks again for writing this.
