Grandmas Coffee Cake

Since getting back I have made my Grandma's coffee cake and chocolate cake. I think now more than ever I want to learn her recipes, perfect them with practice and record them here to preserve them. This is a wonderfully simple cake and full of flavor and it turned out beautifully.

Lasagna with Applewood Smoked Cheese Sauce

I made carbonara and a lasagna while at my parents house yep we are pasta lovers. This lasagna was tasty with the applewood smoked cheese added to the becharmel sauce. I did struggle a little though as a lot of their herbs were way out of date. I didn't realise how much I depended on all my herbs and spices at home. So be sure to give your spice and herb cupboard a clean this spring, herbs and spices really only last 1-2 years. Also consider planting some fresh herbs in your garden or keep in pots on your deck :-) Or if your not big on using herbs and spices like my parents I would suggest maybe a Chinese five spice, an Italian blend and maybe some parsley.

Miso Marinated Salmon

I was reading about miso the other day on NPR and was amazed at how healthy it was and also how many different recipes you could do with it not just miso soup. Here are some cool facts - It is high in manganese, zinc, phosphorus and copper, along with protein and dietary fiber. In fact, one tablespoon of miso carries 2 grams of protein — sort of a "super condiment." - Miso an Ancient Solution to Modern Meals

I saw a great marinate recipe for halibut and also a great salad dressing here is my fish recipe with a few tweaks and with salmon.

Walking in Windsor, England

We arrived safely home to Winston Salem NC last night after a lovely three weeks seeing all the family in the UK, being honest three weeks was a little long and its great to be back in our own home. In the UK we visited my parents in Scotland my Grandparents in Lincolnshire, hubby's sister in Norfolk and his Mum joined us from India and my brother, his girlfriend, hubby's brother, wife and nephew in London and his other brother. We have loads of family to get around the country and see hence the long trip. The last day we decided to spend it Windsor I had never been there it was close to Heathrow airport and well worth a visit.

Ratatouille and Penne

I have been craving light simple meals lately pregnancy does that to me, plus its good for us :-) so I made a simple ratatouille seasoning with Herbs de Provence, fresh vegetables and heirloom tomatoes and mixed with penne.

The Albatross Boat Restaurant

Today we went to Wells Next The Sea a cute little Norfolk seaside town and ate on a Dutch boat dating back to 1899!, its still sea faring. My sister in law was raving about the pancakes and I must say the food was good, simple, fresh and very tasty. A must visit if your in the area.

Norfolk, England Lavender Farm

Today we visited The Norfolk lavender farm with my sister in law and her hubby. We enjoyed the rare breed animals although our little one wasn't all that keen on the smell he he. A browse through the gardens and gift shops and a cup of lavender tea and a cake in the tea room. It was a shame the lavender wasn't in bloom, this happens in July and August. Its still worth a visit though if your ever in the Kings Lynn area.

Continuing my series of  interviewing awesome bloggers with Entrepreneurial ventures, I would love to introduce you to Kim, although I know many of you know her as The Ungourmet . Her blog is one of my favorites and one of the first I started reading after I started Chow and Chatter three years ago. She is humble, a great cook and a wonderful Mum. Italian Seasoned Salmon with Salad and Cous Cous

I made this a little while before coming to the UK its super simple and full of flavor lovely for spring. I have had a fantastic week in Scotland with Mum and Dad now taking the train South to Lincolnshire tomorrow to stay at my Grandparents and also see hubby's family more :-) I do miss the bright sunshine of North Carolina a little though its been rainy of and on the last few days in Scotland. This dish is full of sunshine to me :-)

Interview with Brian from A Thought for Food

I thought it would be fun to interview fellow bloggers who have followed their dreams and started Entrepreneurial ventures one such blogger is the sweet Brian from A Thought for Food, a great Boston based blog with amazing photography. I meet him through twitter and was impressed with his business idea and wish him all the success in the World.

I have started to offer social media coaching and handling social media for folks after what I have learned from blogging and have an iphone recipe app. The sweet Megan from Kitsch in the Kitchen who started a business selling wonderful aprons on etsy often custom made, I have a Paris inspired one. Also Kim from the The Ungourmet has started a cupcake academy business teaching kids to bake in their homes :-) I simply adore folks who follow their hearts and have the guts to start a business. The Highlands

Today we drove through Perthshire to the Highlands we stopped at Gleneagles the World Famous golf course on the way and had cake and coffee. This is a must as it's simply gorgeous and the coffee is reasonably priced sometimes we feel intimated to enter such high class resorts but they don't mind at all if you just want coffee :-)

We drove to Glencoe and visited the visitors center very interesting one of the facts I found fascinating was that Angus Macdonald from the clan Macdonald one of the massacre survivors fled to America and married an American Indian you could see his son Duncan in traditional Indian clothing with his Indian wife :-) it rained later in the day but that's Scotland :-)

Castle Terrace Restaurant

Today we dined at Castle Terrace Restaurant in Edinburgh, it has a wonderful set lunch menu and first class food. Its has only been open 9 months and is the sister restaurant to The Kitchin  an award winning  Michelin star restaurant in Edinburgh. In fact the chefs of both places have known each other since they were 17. We were unable to get a table in The Kitchin so opted for Castle Terrace. It recently received a rising star Michelin star award and is on par for getting a star next year.

East coast railway

We have had a fun filled few days in London seeing my brother and his girlfriend, hubby's siblings and our new little nephew - adorable. Ate some good British food with flare at Bennets Oyster Bar in Battersea and amazing Japanese in Lavender hill. This morning we took the train to Scotland to spend a week with my parents in just 4 1/2 hrs you can be in Edinburgh from London much faster than driving. We tucked into a bacon sandwich with a cuppa on the train and enjoyed the countryside along the way.

Moroccan Inspired Lamb Stew

So Easter weekend I got some lamb chops and then asked on the Chow and Chatter facebook page and on twitter for recipe idea's got some amazing ones, but a lot for leg of lamb, I had chops after reading some blogs and idea's tweeted I decided to make something Inspired by Morocco. I love their cuisine and the use of fruit in savory dishes. But those suggestions will be sure handy when I buy the leg of lamb :-)
