Craft: Decorating an Apron

Here's a fun little craft to do with kiddies especially when the weather is so warm. Buy a cloth apron and decorate with fabric crayons, good for a budding artist and chef.

Roasted Tomato Sauce with Penne

This is a wonderfully easy pasta dish that reminded me of one we had in Italy, a simple pasta with a tomato sauce was often what we ordered for the kids. I adore the simplicity of Italian food and miss it since being back. But we can cook good food at home and smile with the amazing memories.

Austrian Knödel

I had my first Knödel (stale bread dumplings) when we were en route to Munich from Northern Italy and stopped the night in a little town in the Dolomites.  We ate in a little place on a rainy evening, with two tired and hungry kids and were the only people in the place. I always remember how proud the owner was to introduce us to this dish. I re created the spinach one using this recipe, it can just be eaten on its own or in a clear soup. Overall they turned out fairly well but not as soft as the ones there. But they have been making them all their lives :-), kind of like me and chapatti they used to be like rocks now really good 10 years later.

Cherry and White Balsamic Salad

This is a delightful salad, inspired by a great article in The Washington Post about Cherries and it paired with my wee jar of white balsamic vinegar I got in Italy perfectly. I got the vinegar in a cute little artisan food store next to Lake Garda, the owner was eager to educate me on the aged Modena vinegars and hoped I would buy but at 150 Euros not this time, although it is a divine and artisan product for sure.

Bok Choi Fried Rice

One of my go to meals when in a hurry is fried rice in no time at all a simple one pot meal can be whipped up with protein, vegetables and carbohydrate. A nice trick I learnt from my sister in law is to add chopped bok choi to fried rice. I would say baby is a little milder than the bigger variety that can be a tad bitter at times.  So here's the recipe :-)

Here's a wee review of an iphone app featuring various European cities, worth a look and love the fact that once downloaded works without an internet connection.

Food market in Bolzano, Italy

On our amazing road drive up through the Dolomites we made a stop at Bolzano in northern Italy. I highly recommend a visit it's a town with rich history and cultural heritage. Up until world war one this part of Italy was Austrian and it really is a city of two cuisines and it's reflected in the market. I was also impressed by the town planning you come of the highway and park in a well signed underground parking garage and have a short walk into the stunning town center.

Whole Roasted Grouper

This dish was inspired  by this fun clip on how to roast a whole fish in The New York Times, its so simple and we now make it all the time.

Its easy to roast a whole fish while the fish may be expensive to buy we find we get at least two meals from it when combined with cous cous or quinoa and a salad.
