Eggplant Dal

Here's a great recipe for an eggplant/brinjal dal. Dal is a staple in our house and hubby normally makes it as he's better at it:-) sometimes when we mess up dishes a few times we get scared to make them again, well thats me speaking my dal often turns out too thick and not so great. But now I have the ratio right its a good consistency and after nearly 10 years of marriage I am over my fear of using the pressure cooker.

Indian Potato Chips

These potato chips are easy to make and bursting with spicy flavor. They could be a nice snack but really they shine when eaten with dal. My hubby often makes them. I made these when my parents were here I have fond memories of the day as we all played musical chairs for the first time the kids loved it.

  • about 5 potatoes thinly sliced either with a knife or a mandoline
  • salt to taste
  • one teaspoon masala powder or any desired curry powder
  • about a tablespoon of canola oil

  1. slice the potatoes
  2. coat the slices in masala powder, salt and a little oil
  3. heat a little oil in a hot pan and lightly pan fry about 3 minutes on each side until crisp.

Served with cauliflower dal, stay tuned for a dal recipe :-)

and check out the blossoms on my fava bean plants exciting, love gardening

Have a great weekend everyone

Roasted Vegetable and Farro Salad

This is my new favorite thing to make, I have made it a few times recently, simple and full of flavor, what chow and chatter is all about. Farro is an ancient type of wheat high in protein, B vitamins, vitamin E, magnesium, selenium and, of course, fiber. Its easy to cook and has a nice nutty flavor, it can also be made into a risotto, I made one with pancetta and shitake recently. Any seasonal vegetables can be roasted to add, I used lots of wonderful spring asparagus.

Washington DC: blossoms and global tastes

We have just spend a lovely weekend in Washington DC with our friends. It's not so far from us and its such a great city to visit. We were lucky enough to still see a few blossoms on the trees. The whole city has been seduced by these beautiful little flowers that change from white to pink almost in the blink of an eye. With carnivals, a Japanese street festival, blossom inspired cocktails and store fronts decorated with them.

One of my favorite parts of Washington is the food scene and eating from around the world. Late the first evening we had a chivito a Uruguayan sandwich made with sirloin, egg, mayonnaise, bacon, olives and mozzarella. One heck of a sandwich but so good in a gas station

The next day we ate in DGS delicatessen a cool new restaurant recommended by Shulie @foodwanderings it's modern Jewish food. To me it brought fun recipes from different parts of the world and served in a fun atmosphere.

We were also treated to a great farmers market this morning in DuPont circle

Peach blossoms

Then we had Ethiopian

Prawns with injera their flatbread made with teff

Ethiopian potato salad lemony with a kick
The kids weren't too sure about this food but we just sat back and didn't make a fuss and then they tried it.

Hope you all had a good weekend filled with good food and smiles

Cinnamon Rolls with a Story

The internet doesn't really need another Cinnamon Roll recipe, but the story behind them is fun. When my parents were here it was the week leading up to Easter and I decided to try and make hot cross buns, they failed I added hot water and killed the yeast as the dough never rose. But me being me and didn't want to be conquered by some wee yeastie beasties, I tried again I googled recipes and found an easy one for cinnamon rolls by Paula Dean, she knows cakes. This time the dough rose yippee and I stayed up to 11pm to eat one with a hot chocolate fresh out of the oven with my Dad!!
