Guest Post: Malaysian Spiced Chicken -Ayam Golek

It gives me great pleasure to introduce you all to Sonia of Nasi Lemak Lover, she is a Mum to 3 kids, happily married and a lover of Malaysian food, in fact Nasi Lewak means fragrant coconut rice a National Malaysian dish. I really enjoy her blog, the cute snaps of her kids and the tasty food she prepares and from time to time you are treated to posts on Malaysian culture like this wedding post, complete with traditions and gorgeous pictures.

This is one of my favorite things about food blogging meeting wonderful folks from around the globe, learning about the culture and food and then trying out the recipes in my own kitchen. I am sure many of you know Sonia if not be sure to follow along and learn :-)

Nasi Lemak Lover 1st guest post specially for Rebecca aka Chow and Chatter

I saw a lot of bloggers posted with guest post before.  I was thinking don’t know when I can be invited too to write a guest post (It’s a big thing for me ^^). When Rebecca (Chow and Chatter) asked me to write a guest post on her blog, I just couldn’t believe that I was invited to do so and I am excited. I did not immediately reply her as I need to think about something meaningful for my 1st guest post. After second thought, finally I decided to publish only my 1st guest post in August with a meaningful post.

Why I choose only the post to be published in August?  This is because we are celebrating our 53th Hari Merderka (Independence Day).  Malaysia was declared independent in August 31, 1957 with Malaysia’s beloved first Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman’s historic declaration of  “Merderka! Merderka! Merderka!”, and commemorating the independence of the Federation of Malaya from British colonial rule.

In August, I’m actually planning to cook Bapa Malaysia (Father of Malaysia) Tunku Abdul Rahman‘s favourite dishes which published in Flavours Food Magazine in Aug 2003. Our Bapa Malaysia had a good appetite for Malay delicacies as well as English fare (At the age of 17, he studied at St Catherine’s College in Cambridge and he first picked up culinary skills as a student).

One of his favourite dish is Ayam Golek, and I would like to dedicate my 1st Merderka meal to Rebecca’s guest post here, Ayam Golek, also known as “ Ayam Percik” ,  chicken grilled with spices and coconut milk. It is a type of cuisine from east coast of Malaysia.

Ayam Golek (Spiced chicken with coconut milk), Merderka meal 1

700g chicken (half bird)
150ml thick coconut milk
5g tamarind paste (asam jawa)
3tbsp water
1/2tbsp sugar
3/4tsp salt, or to taste

Spice paste (ground)
2 cloves garlic
2cm ginger
2 stalks lemongrass (serai)
1tbsp coriander seeds (biji ketumbar)
1/2tbsp cumin powder (jintan putih)
12/tsp ground black pepper

Method
1.     Rub some salt and tapioca flour onto chicken and rinse under running water to clean it. Repeat if necessary. Drip dry.
2.     Mix tamarind paste with water and strain. Set aside.
3.     In a wok or large pot, cook the chicken together with the spice paste, coconut milk and tamarind water over a medium heat.
4.     Baste Chicken with the gravy occasionally, turning over the bird every now and then.
5.     Allow to cook until gravy is almost dry.
6.     Transfer the chicken to a baking tray and roast in a preheated oven at 180c until it is nicely brown all over.
7.     Serve, garnished with hard boiled eggs and spring onions.

** The small Malaysia’s flag was handmade by my daughter, Thanks dear!!
**if you like lemongrass and coriander, I’m sure you will like this Ayam Golek, full of these spices flavour.

  8. The chicken looks most delicious, indeed.. and it also sets me wondering about something else - it is the Singapore National day today - I wonder if there are any Singapore bloggers out there who has made anything with the Singapore flag on it...I wish I have done something like that..

  11. Looks beautiful, and I am sure my husband would like it since he loves chicken and I never make it because I am vegetarian. There was a great Malaysian restaurant in Vegas, but one day I went there and it was a Chinese place instead and we sat down and discovered they had Human meat on the menu. After thinking long and hard before we walked out, of course, I realized it must have been a bad typo and should have (or so we hope) said Hunan meat.
