My Granddad taught me ....

My Granddad went home today, and I wanted to do a wee post in tribute to him and what he has taught me ....

What my Granddad taught me

Don't grumble - even with all his health issues he didn't, amazing

Smile and have a good sense of humor

How to garden, this post from last year highlights My Gardening Journey so far, it includes a clip of his amazing garden, he even makes a camino at the end

Welcome everyone into your home

Accept people as they are

How to cook egg soup this is the only thing he said he could cook, basically boiling an egg

Be proud of your roots and where you come from he is from Lincolnshire and so am I  a fun term for folks from Lincolnshire are yellow bellies (not sure why)

What true love is - he adores my grandma and is proud of her, I remember her getting ready to go out with friends and noticing how he admired her they would have been married 60 years this year

Find humor in difficult situations when we visited him in Leicester hospital he was Joking with staff that he was going to get a holiday home in Wales but Leicester would do

Generosity

Be hard working I remember when I was small he worked nights and we had to try and be quiet in the house

Be approachable

Give hugs he was tall and gave the best ones I will miss these :-)

I bought these broad bean seeds today and plan to plant them, I will continue to garden and teach the kids so his legacy as an amazing person and master gardener will live on

When I asked him recently what songs he liked he mentioned this one, a fun drinking song from WWII about having fun and forgetting your worries :

There's a garden, what a garden
Only happy faces bloom there
And there's never any room there
For a worry or a gloom there

Oh there's music and there's dancing
And a lot of sweet romancing
When they play the polka
They all get in the swing

Every time they hear that com-pa-pa
Everybody feels so tra-la-la
They want to throw their cares away
They all go lah-de-ah-de-ay

Then they hear a rumble on the floor
It's the big surprise they're waiting for
And all the couples form a ring
For miles around you'll hear them sing

Roll out the barrel, we'll have a barrel of fun
Roll out the barrel, we've got the blues on the run
Zing boom tararrel, sing out a song of good cheer
Now's the time to roll the barrel, cause the gang's all here

La-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la-la-la-la
Hey, hey, hey
La-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la-la-la-la
Hey, hey, hey
La-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la-la-la-la

Now's the time to roll the barrel, cause the gang's all here

La-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la-la-la-la
Hey, hey, hey
La-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la-la-la-la
Hey, hey, hey
La-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la-la-la-la

Now's the time to roll the barrel, cause the gang's all here

If I could just be 10% of how good a person my Granddad was I would be happy

I was and remain one of his biggest fans

  13. That is very touching tribute to your granddad. I am a big fan of mine as well even though it hurts me so much that I will not see him anymore. It must be a generational thing, all those things you mentioned, I can relate to my grandfather :)
