Sushi Making Fun

So our wee now 4 year old daughter loves sushi. We made some recently at home all in all it was a lot of fun to make and not really that hard, just need some sushi rice, nori and a bamboo mat to roll it in. We choose to fill it with shrimp and avocado. As it was for kids we used cooked fish although when we are out she eats raw from a good place made fresh.

Overall it came out well, but I think we used a tad too much rice and it was all over the place. I based the technique and recipes on these two posts - California roll recipe from No recipes and Nami's blog Just one Cookbook. Both have great step by step pictures.

Once I nail my version I will share a recipe :-)

  19. Nice work with the sushi! We have made it before. The sushi rice is really what does the trick. If you don't get that right, the rest of the adventure goes down hill. Yours looks great!

  20. I've made my own sushi a few times. It's fun but I think my preference is to have it made for me. This looks great, though!

My daughter loves sushi too, and I have been serving her sushi rice for so long. She loves it with furikake because it tastes like sushi. She even said she wanted to live in Japan! I haven't made the rice on the outside rolls yet! Yours looks so nice!

  27. Happy Birthday to Jasmine! She seems like she had a great b-day. :) Your shrimp and avocado rolls look nice!!! Dipping in vinegar water between rolling will help in terms of sticky hands and rice being all over the place. Also yes, using as little rice as possible (you can still see seaweed from between rice) is the key to make good rolls and it's a lot easier to work with. Thank you for the kind mention and I'm glad you enjoyed making sushi at home!

  28. I totally agree, sushi is not difficult at all. I made it some time ago and I had fun while doing it as well. It's so lovely that you did it with your doughter. And pictures are very sweet :)

  30. Happy Birthday to Jasmine. How quickly they grow!
I love sushi but never tried at home. Sounds complicated, I guess because the ingredients are not my typical grocery store list. Would like to learn it from someone in person then I would feel comfortable enough.

  31. Wow, Jasmine is so grown up! I have made sushi before (but never at home!). I think my kids would LOVE it - its fun, puts them in control of what they want and is tasty too! We've been making a lot of vietnamese rice rolls and I find even the picky eaters gobble up the veggies. Good to see your baby too and you - looking well. Lots of love X X X
