Irish Soda Bread

We made this soda bread recently, I love getting the kids in the kitchen and simple recipes like this one are great, easy to follow and they can get stuck in mixing and kneading its also healthy. Remember little kids make a mess take a deep breath its so worth it, as its priceless if they grow up with a desire to cook and eat healthy food.

Irish Soda Bread

Ingredients:

  • one tablespoon of butter for greasing
  • 300 g plain flour about 2 1/2 cups
  • 300g wholewheat flour
  • 2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
  • 2 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg beaten
  • 425 ml of natural yogurt, about 1 1/2 cups I used Greek yogurt
Method:

  1. grease a baking sheet with butter and dust with flour
  2. sieve the flours, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda, sugar and salt into a large bowl
  3. in another bowl, beat the egg and yogurt and then add to the dry ingredients
  4. knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for a few minutes shape into a ball and mark with a cross ( I made this with the kids and let them make two mini ones)
  5. bake in a pre heated oven at 375 for 40 minutes until brown
  6. serve with butter and jam :-)
